Little History

1960 Foundation of the association "Friends of the Salzburger Tiergarten Hellbrunn" (later renamed Salzburger Tiergarten Hellbrunn) by Henry Windischbauer (Director since 1962), Councillor Dipl.Ing. Franz Wallack, deputy mayor Hans Donnenberg, Prof. Dr. EP Tratz (Director Museum of Natural History), Dr. Hans Menzel (editor) and Henry Waggerl (writer). Livestock: 27 red deer, 12 fallow deer, one piece of ibex, 2 mouflons, 4 boars, 1 goat.

1961 was the gates of the World Mountain Zoo opened for Visitors.

1966 Windischbauer Tratz and start the "wildlife park Project for bison and wild horses. "In the same year began with the establishment of a Windischbauer griffon vulture colony, which still exists today.

In 1972 the Salzburger Tiergarten was faced with closure. The zoo was in every aspect, literally on the floor and was also nationally or internationally outlawed, for reasons of species protection by international threat and the there by ban on imports of orang utans by EAZA, wich was ignored.

1976 Colonel Frederick Lacchini took over the zoo in this bad situation. The deciding factors for a new beginning, was that city and province of Salzburg where the patrons of the future, so that the zoo's financial deficits were covered. It was a decent channel, and a new farm building, new big cats enclosures, a wisent house and a new house for lemurs Gibbon where built. Especially the enclosures got soon a good international claim.

1990 Colonel Lacchini gave the zoo to his successor, Dr. Rainer lapel and the principe of the Geo-zoo was introduced. Thus, in view of the landscape and climatic situation three zoogeographical enclosure zones (Eurasia, Africa and South America) was created. Then the actual implementation of the Geo-zoo idea began with the construction of large-scale Africa installations . Above all, the cheetah enclosure and the enclosures for white rhinos found international acclaim and featured in an animal Salzburg horticultural milestone

In 2003, the association "Salzburger Tiergarten Hellbrunn" in the Salzburg Zoo Charitable GmbH was converted. Shareholders of the company are in equal parts of city and province of Salzburg. The "Friends of Salzburg Zoo" was founded.

2005 Sabine Grebner took over the management of the Salzburg Zoo Gem Inc. In 2006, the new facilities for alpacas, rheas, maras and maned wolves were opened. The South American house with outdoor facilities for monkey opened its doors a year later. The completion of the Ark petting zoos for endangered old breeds of domestic animals occurred in 2008. The new lion house, with animals from different habitats in Africa, was opened in spring 2010.

Map 2015 Map 2020

After we have paid the entrance we go to the left until the end of the road (and the Castle Hellbrunn entrance) and see to the left since the petting area and the reindeer. Let us now turn 180 degrees, we see the ibex, it is again in the wild in Austria, and the wolverine. The greatest local predator is actually the brown bear, unfortunately he died in Austria, there are still a healthy populations in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Other species are the European otter and the chamois. If we follow the path left we can already see the red panda from Asia and from the Northern Hemisphere the wolf. In this corner we have the tropical house with marmosets and macaws. Let's go left again, we see the flamingos, which get their color in the nature of small crustaceans. Behind them we have two enclosures for South American predators, namely the coati and the maned wolf, but also a house for the South American capuchin monkeys and various species of reptiles and fish. Looking now at alpacas and several big cats, such as the jaguar, snow leopard and lynx - that also is living in Austria. Back to the left we see the Parma wallabies and the banded mongoose. We have looked at the ring-tailed lemurs and a large savanna enclosur, where I think the mountain in the background always look like the Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. If we follow the path further, we see the lion enclosure and then after a while the enclosure is for cheetahs. Past the bird park we finde the final enclosure for the bactrian camel and the Przewalski horse. Get back on the path to the entrance, we can see free-flying griffon vulture, which the zoo has placed back into the Austrian nature.
